Warriors of Chaos
Rare Unit Tactics

The Rare Unit section of the Warriors of Chaos army book is where you can find the really bit hitters that you can pick for your army. However these options are in the Rare secion for a reason, you do not want to fill your army with these units. One or two will be enough to add character and a a challenge for your opponents.

Chaos Spawn

If you want to add a bit of randomness in to the army then the Chaos Spawn may be what you are looking for. The Chaos Spawn have a random movement value and a random number of attacks.

For me the Chaos Spawn seems to be a poor choice for an army. The first reason for this is that randomness does not make for good strategic planning. It is true that the plan is to have it so that your enemy does not know what you are doing, however this should not be at the expense of not knowing what your own troops are doing yourself! The second reason is that the Chaos Spawn seems very expensive for what you get. Yes it is true that they have S5 and can be quite nimble, but if you compare these to the Goblin Squig Hoppers that have a similar stats line, you will see that they are quite expensive. And the last reson I do not think that the Chaos Spawn are worth the points is because they come as units of one. This means that they are easy to pick off, and will not have much impact if they his a full unit.

Giant Tactics

Giants are great, they stride across the battle field absorbing fire that would wipe out a regiment and then dive on to battle flinging troops to the four winds, and jumping up and down on those war machines.

Ok, Giants may not be as good as that, but they do add punch to your army. They are not invulnerable either. A will placed bolt shot, cannonball, or doom diver can take out a Giant, sometimes with one hit. However while the heavy artillery and magic users are trying to take out the Giant, our troops can get in to position.

Marks of Chaos

The Chaos Giant is 25 points more than Giants found in other armies, and for your 25 points you get nothing. However the chaos Giants can take a Mark of Chaos. These Marks bestow special rules and cost additional points as usual.

Considering that you are already stumping up 25 pionts upfront, these options do get expensive. for example to get the mark of Khorn will add +1 S to the Chaos Giants stats, but will cost you 55 points above the cost of Giants in the other armies. For this to be worth the points you will need to be facing an army with a lot of big stuff.
