Wargame Tactics: Play better tactics to win more games

Wargame Tactics

Because better tactics win more games!

Warhammer 40k
Tau Tactics

The Warhammer 40k Tau are a new race to the Warhammer universe.

The Tau have potentially bigger, more devastating weapons that the Imperial Guard. They are poor in close combat which is where the Kroot come in. The Kroot have a lower level of technology but are far better at close combat.

In this section we will be looking at the Tau and their tactics. As usual, this guide does not replace the Warhammer 40k rulebook or the Tau Codex, but acts as an additional guide. If you are going to play Tau as an army then I highly recommend getting a copy of the rulebooks.

General Tau Tactics

Warhammer 40k Tau Fire WarriorThe Tau are designed as a very ballistic army, and this is what your opponents will be expecting. You can expect that he will either soften you up from long range with ordinance weapons like the Whirlwind or Basilisk, or assault very quickly with deep strike and vehicle mounted troops, or both.

To combat an ordinance attack you will have to employ a Markerlight and Seeker Missile combination. The main difficulty here is getting a line of sight from one of your squads. Infiltrating, Jetpack wearing Stealth Teams are the best option for this role. As the team leader is the only model allowed to have a Markerlight than I would suggest that two three man squads will be more effective than one six man squad.

To combat fast and deep striking assault teams you will need to slow him down as fast as possible. This can be done by targeting his fast vehicles and squads as a priority, and also by keeping a line of Kroot between your fire teams and the enemy.

Tau are up-side-down as far as movement goes. The Tau elite squads can move 12" a turn with some powerful weapons attached, 18" if the run in the shooting phase, yet their Kroot hand to hand specialists are slow. This means that you will have to devise unique manoeuvres for your troops. For example how are you going to capture quarters or rescue markers in missions?

Tau Special Rules

The Tau army does not have any special rules that apply to the whole army. There are special rules that apply to individual squad types and they have been detailed in the sections that deal with those squads.
