The Stormcast Eternal are not the only humans fighting to restore order in the Age of Sigmar realms. There are also the forces of Bretonnia and the also the Empire / Guilds. In this section we will have a look at the tactics for Free Peoples! The two Human forces have opposing styles of play. The Bretonnia army consists of Elite Knights backed up by low quality serfs and archers. The Empire and Guilds army usually consists of larger units of pike men and musketeers backed up with a few elite units of magic users and horsemen. To really mix things up have a think about fielding the best of each army to create really effective force! Forces of the Freeguilds The forces of the Freeguilds seem to be styled on the armies of the Renaissance Wars that raged through Italy between 1494 to 1559. The Freeguilds are models from the Warhammer Fantasy Battles where it was a well developed army. This means that you should be able to find units to fulfil most needs. Freeguild General on Griffon Freeguild General on Horse and Foot Demigryph Knights Freeguild Outriders Freeguild Pistolers Freeguild Greatswords Freeguild Guard Freeguild Handgunners Freeguild Crossbowmen Freeguild Archers…

In Age of Sigmar Black Orcs are called Ironjawz. so Really this model should be the Ironjawz Big Boss, but as hew was left out of the Ironjawz army book we will keep to how he is known in the Age of Sigmar App, the call him the Black Orc Big Boss. Black Orcs and Ironjaws are bigger tougher cousins of the regular Orruks. Also they tend to have better weapons and armour. The Black Orc Big Boss is the biggest and badest of the mob that earned respect and following by beating up anyone that argued with him! Also see: AoS Orruk Ironjaws Tactics General Black Orc Big Boss Tactics There is nothing subtle about the Black Orc Big Boss. He is designed to get stuck in to the close combat wielding his Deff Choppa and lobbing of heads left right and centre. The Black Orc Big Boss can make a very acceptable general. If you do have him as your general then he works best in mob or two of Black Orcs and Ironjaws. However there are usually better options available as an Orruk General, so the main role for the Black Orc Boss is as a secondary…

As the Daemon Prince swooped down on the Aelf Spearmen. Raising his mighty axe the Daemon Prince was surprised by a black cloaked Shadowblades Assassin leaping out and slashing him half a dozen times. “Oooh, they sting like paper cuts! “. But what the Daemon Prince really didn’t see coming was the black poison on the blade that would be his downfall. Assassins are delicate tools that need careful use and handling. The Aelf Shadowblades assassin are an example of this. Used correctly they can strike down your opponents warlord and win the game, used with a heavy hand and they will be swept aside without a second thought. General Shadowblades Assassin Tactics With your assassin you will need to pick your target before the game starts, as you set up your units. This is because you need to pick which unit you are going to add your assassin to. It also helps if you are setting up your units second. Once you have picked your target you can place your assassin in a unit that will get him there. Remember that you do not have to place the model on the table, just mark down which unit he is…

The Lord-Celestant is a major character in the Storm cast Eternal army. The Lord-Celestant is strong, highly skilled and well armed. With this model he rides a Dragoth. This gives him extra speed and more attacks. The Lord-Celestant on Dragoth is one of the models that are included in the Age of Sigma starter box so you can be sure that you will see a number of these models in Age of Sigma battles. This means that even if you do not play Stormcast Eternals you will need to know it’s strengths and weaknesses. So with that let’s look at… Lord-Celestant General Tactics The Lord-Celestant does not have any shooting weapons so he is best getting stuck in the fight. However without support your Lord-Celestant will be easy pray for any sizeable mob of enemy. This means that you will need to use him in coordination with other units. This is specially true if your Lord-Celestant is your general. This is because your Generals Abilities have a range limit and if he is out on his own then he will be less effective. Also be aware that the Lord-Celestant’s weapon has a big effect on the best way to use…

Ardboys are bigger tougher Orc that instead of leading their own mobs. These Ardboys mobs are usually hard enough to deal with any opposing elite units. If you wondered where the 8th edition Black Orcs went in Age of Sigmar, well you have found them! General Orruk Ardboys Tactics You may notice that Ardboys move an inch a turn less than Orruk Boys. This should mean that the Orruk boys get in to combat first. This is good. It means that the Orruk boys will act as a natural shield holding back the enemy rank and file troops while your Ardboys seek out bigger targets. Orruk Ardboys have 2 wounds an extra point of bravery and a 4+ save from the extra armour the Ardboys wear. Also see: Orruk Black Orc Big Boss Tactics Also see: Orruk and Arra Boys Tactics Also buy: Irongawz Orruk Ardboys from Wayland Games Orruk Ardboys Weapons Orruk Ardboys get a wider weapon choice than the first Black Orc warscroll offered. If you have not built your models yet have a look at the different 3weapon choices and think about how they match your style of play. None of the weapon options are massively better…

Yes the original Tyranid army ‘Genetealer Cults’ are back and they are bigger and sneakier than ever. As the vanguard of the Tyranid collective, Genestealers hide on floating space hulks and stowing away on unsuspecting commercial scavenging space craft. When these salvage ships land on a populated planet the Genestealers slip off the space craft and slip in to the dark recesses of the spaceport. From these dark recesses the Genestealers hypnotize those at the lower edges of society, infecting them with the Genestealer DNA. The of spring of these thralls are the Hybrids that become the core of the insurgent army that will disrupt the defence forces just as the Tyranid main force arrives. Before the Tyranids existed as a WH40k army Games Workshop released a board game based on 40k ( as they do from time to time ) called ‘Space Hulk’. The first variant of Space Hulk had two expansion sets. One called ‘Deathwing’ ( introducing the Dark Angel first company ) and one called ‘ Genestealer ‘ that introduced Genestealer Cults to the 40k universe. Warhammer.Wikia has a detailed page on the history the of Space Hulk game. Over time this army sported off the Tyranid army that has mainly superseded them. Now with a new boxed…

AoS Soul Grinder Tactics The AoS Soul Grinder is a model that was created for the Warhammer 40k Chaos Daemon army but has been imported in to the Warhammer 8th edition and Age of Sigmar games. The Soul Grinder is quite a monster. It has 16 wounds, a bravery score of 10 and an arsenal of missile and melee weapons. It is fast too. Unwounded the Soul Grinder can move 12″ plus the usual D6 inch run if you want to too. On top of this the Soul Grinder gets a special rule with one of it’s melee weapons you get a 1 in 6 chance to cause 6 mortal wounds to a Hero or Monster that you are in close combat with. You will want to be sure that fielding the Soul Grinder will not disrupt the balance of the game. It’s one thing to use a powerful model to win a battle, but if the games are too one sided you will find that no one will want to play with you! So what is the best roll for the Soul Grinder? Well it looks like an army in one model. There is a lot to be said…

The Generals Handbook has been out for a month at the time of writing and it has added new ways of playing Age of Sigmar, some of these are very familiar to veteran players! Pitched Battles The most important introduction, or reintroduction, of the ‘pitched battle’ point based games. Assigning points to units, and having a maximum points limit for a battle has been the best way of being sure that if you win or loose, that it is because of your skills and not because the models on the table are hopelessly out matched. Just a note at this point to say that no points system is perfect. You will always get players that say certain units are under or over priced as far as point goes. They usually be the players that jeer st other players for playing ‘cheesy unbalanced’ armies. Don’t listen to them. Points are there to give the best level playing field as possible. In the Generals Handbook Games Workshop have kept the rules as simple as possible. Building on the four pages of original rules, the General Handbook adds another four pages, plus a few tables listing the current units and their points costs….

Magic in Age of Sigmar is both easy and powerful, so let’s see how it works! First off to use magic you will need a wizard in your army. There are magical items in the game, usually carried by heroes, but wizards are your best option. There’s no special magic phase in Age of Sigmar. It’s all done in the hero phase at the start of each turn. This means that your wizard can cast spells before your commander uses his command skills, after the command skills. If you have more than you can cast your magic between your command skills. Also if you have more than one wizard you can cast their skills in any order. As you can cast your magic in any order have a think about which spells will stop your opponent stopping your other spells later in the round. A fireball in the chest often does the job! To cast a spell you roll two dice ( usually, check the wizards special rules) and roll a number equal or higher than the casting value for the spell. This means that it is a good idea to know now likely it will be that a spell…
